How to Detox Everyday with Water

Everything you eat, drink, breathe and put on your skin affects your health, immune system, energy, and mood. Not to mention it all goes through the same place, your liver. 

Our most overburdened organ, our liver, processes anything that you come in contact with and either uses it elsewhere in your body or excretes it through urine, your digestive tract or skin. If you overload your liver with low quality, harmful ingredients, your body will perform at a low capacity. If you're not encouraging natural detoxification processes through hydration, sweat, urine, and elimination on a regular basis, you can increase your toxic load. Which increases the risk of toxins entering your bloodstream and seriously complicating your health. 

This is why it's so important to help your body naturally detoxify and give your liver some time to rest and relax. 

On a daily basis there are many things you can do to help your body naturally detoxify like:

  • remove inflammatory foods, such as dairy, gluten, soy, sugar, alcohol, caffeine
  • eat whole, unprocessed, predominantly plant-based foods
  • incorporate more ginger into your diet, this anti-inflammatory, antioxidant rich herb stimulates digestion and natural detoxification processes to remove built up toxins in the colon, liver and other organs.
  • drink peppermint tea
  • eat slower and chew more
  • exercise - sweating helps your body remove toxins and it releases endorphins that help fuel you throughout the day with natural healthy energy
  • incorporate cold pressed juice into your routine, it's an excellent source of essential nutrients to reduce inflammation and flush those nasty toxins. 
  • add lemon to your water, this will balance your ph levels to create a more alkaline environment for enzymes to function at their best and aid digestion.

You should drink 2-3 litres of filtered water a day. For some, this can seem daunting. If you struggle with drinking plain water, these Detox Water recipes may be perfect!

It’s important to use organic produce for detox water. The fruit will be sitting in the water for at least a few hours and it’s important to prevent contamination from pesticides, herbicides and other harmful chemicals.

 

THE FAT BURNER

You will need:

2 litres filtered water
1/2 lemon, sliced
1/2 lime, sliced
1/4-1/2 grapefruit, sliced
1 small cucumber, sliced
5-10 mint leaves

How to:

Wash your fruit well, slice, and add to the filtered water in a large pitcher. Let the ingredients sit for 1-2 hours, to allow the fruit to infuse the water.

Why I love this detox water:

The grapefruit juice encourages your liver to burn excess fat instead of store it. The cucumber, lemon, and lime are natural diuretics that will help flush toxins and excess water, while helping to heal your digestive tract. The mint leaves will help ease any indigestion and bloating you may be experiencing.

APPLE SPICE

You will need:

24 oz filtered water
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1/2 fresh lemon, juiced
1 tsp true cinnamon
1/2 apple, thinly sliced

How to:

Blend all ingredients except the apples. Wash apples well, slice and add to the water. Shake well before drinking. Let the ingredients sit for 1-2 hours, to allow the fruit to infuse the water.

Why I love this detox water:

This detox water is one for the keeners. The apple cider vinegar helps stabilize blood sugar, fight bad bacteria, and provides probiotics to promote a healthy gastrointestinal tract. The cinnamon helps balance blood sugar and curb your sugar cravings.

WATERMELON HYDRATOR

You will need:

2 litres filtered water
1/4 watermelon, cubed
4 sprigs of fresh rosemary
5-6 strawberries, sliced

How to:

Wash your fruit well, slice, and add to the filtered water in a large pitcher. Let the ingredients sit for 1-2 hours, to allow the fruit to infuse the water.

Why I love this detox water:

This water combines watermelon, strawberry, and rosemary. It tastes delicious and is festive to look at with its red and green colour profile. Watermelon is made of approximately 92% water, and provides a boost of vitamins C and B and antioxidants. The strawberries are antioxidant rich with tons of vitamin C and will help strengthen your immune system to fight colds and flus. Finally, the rosemary will help relieve any pain and inflammation that you may be experiencing, stimulate circulation, and sooth your stomach.

STORING YOUR DETOX WATER

If you plan to drink the detox water later in the day (5+ hours later), remove the fruit and store the infused water in the fridge. You run the risk of the fruit decomposing in the water if you leave it for too long! Consume the detox water within two days for optimal results.
